Medicaid is a federal and state program that helps cover medical costs for some people with limited income and resources. MassHealth is the name of the Medicaid program in Massachusetts.
MassHealth has several programs to serve various populations. There are different applications for the programs; if you have questions about which application you should complete, please call us at 1-800-243-4636 (select the option for the SHINE Program) to speak with a SHINE counselor.
Medicare Savings Programs
In Massachusetts, the MassHealth Buy-In programs assist with paying Medicare premiums for those who qualify based on income. Individuals who qualify for one of the Buy-In programs will also automatically be eligible for Extra Help to assist with prescription costs under Medicare Part D. Depending on your level of eligibility, the Buy-In program may also help to pay your Medicare deductibles, coinsurance, or copayments.
MassHealth or the Health Safety Net, for individuals aged 65+ or individuals living in long-term care
MassHealth or the Health Safety Net programs could help with medical and prescription coverage costs if you meet income and asset limits. This application is for individuals who are aged 65 or older, and also for individuals under the age of 65 who live in long-term care facilities.
